Project Description

Computer power and digital technology have developed exponentially within the last decade. 3D visualisation has played a significant role across a diverse range of design sectors including architecture, product design and the digital games industry. In fashion however, most designers still use traditional design methods which inhibits creativity, manufacturing efficiency and associated profitability. My investigation explores a number of formative design processes utilising new technology, appropriate aspects of 3D visualisation and how these aspects can inform and extend the boundaries of fashion design and innovation.

Proposal

To identify the symbiotic relationship between fashion and contemporary design processes that use 3D digital technology in order to develop new meaning and possibilities for the future of fashion. The methodology which draws on the intellectual principles and concepts inherent in ‘high design’ including architecture and automobile design also reflects the evolution of my personal design
process and skills. The resultant virtual catwalk provides an insight into the advantages of migrating to a 3D environment from a design, manufacturing and consumer orientated prospective.

This project explores how the application of 3D digital technologies can be utilised within the fashion design process to improve visualisation, extend creativity and satisfy future manufacturing requirements. It demonstrates specific applications of 3D technology already established in other areas of the creative industries and how this can be applied to extend contemporary practices in fashion design.
